Life can be very difficult for children
who find that they are battling against the frustrations of emotional and
behavioural problems related to learning difficulties such as ADHD.
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
is one of the most researched childhood disorders. As a result,
many forms of therapy have been tried, tested and continue to be used
as successful techniques for the child and the family.
Children with ADHD may experience behaviour difficulties at home and school
and in the community. They may also find peer interactions problematic
while also trying to deal with poor academic achievement and issues with
overall adjustment in their environment.
All of these issues would cause most
children and their families to experience strong feelings of helplessness,
anger, confusion and resentment. A simple diagnosis and a detailed understanding
of the disorder (be it ADHD or some other learning difficulty) for the
family and child can at times be sufficient, but more often further intervention
is necessary.
Speaking to a professional therapist
can be a valuable part of the process by which a family begins to adapt and adjust
to the diagnosis of a child with learning difficulties.
A qualified therapist can be in a position
to offer support and impartial advice and be understanding to what the child
is going through. Guidance can be offered to the whole family
as well as providing a confidential service to the child to discuss issues
and dilemmas and devise techiniques and alternatives to the problems they
face.
Clinical Assessment
This service is available to families who are unsure about what service would
best suit their child and want a consultation to discuss the options available
to them. An appointment is set up first with the parents to gain as
much background information about the child. Following this the child
is seen and assessed. A written report can also be produced as
a result of this consultation if requested.
Psychological Counselling
An initial appointment is set up with the parents to gain a
clear account of the child's background and issues, to discuss concerns, explain
procedures and look at where to begin in setting short and long-term objectives.
Following this consultation, we work mainly with the child in regular counselling
sessions for a set amount of time. At an agreed stage with the
parents, there will be another family meeting to discuss progress and further
concerns and to set new goals. The process can continue like this for
an undefined period of time.
The sessions with the child and parents
are confidential and aim to develop strategies and solutions to problems that
the child is facing at home or at school.
